Therapeutic Riding benefits : Physical, Behavioral, Cognitive and Emotional:

  • Therapeutic Riding benefits clients Physical Health because it combines rhythmic exercise with passive and active stretching. It also provides clients the opportunities for increased fitness, self-confidence and a sense of independence. Benefits include flexibility, balance, muscle strength, increased fitness, self-confidence, sense of independence, endurance, stamina.  Improvement can be seen and measured because horseback riding gently and rhythmically moves the riders body in a manner similar to human gait,
  • For a child or adult with a behavioral diagnosis being able to successfully control as large an animal as a horse can be very empowering, providing them the opportunities to express gentleness and self-control.
  • Riders with learning diagnosis can often feel like they have few successes in their lives; therapeutic riding provides them with the ability to do something many others do not know how to do.  Benefits include sequencing, confidence, interpersonal relationships, following directions, as well as fine and gross motor skills.
  • Thereapeutic riding can benefit the emotional health of clients because the physical demands of riding coupled with the involvement of a calm, accepting animal both relieves tension and stimulates positive approaches to problem solving and learning. In order to ride correctly and effectively one must have empathy for the horse and how the horse is feeling and why. Teaching an emotional rider to regard how the horse is feeling and why encourages riders to focus not on them, but on the horse.
